Appalachian State University is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. It was founded in 1899 and has been a part of the 16-member University of North Carolina system since 1972. The campus is situated on 585 acres. Academic offerings include 130 undergraduate majors and 70 areas of specialization for postgraduate studies. The University seeks to nurture an intellectual climate in which truth is sought and respected, critical thinking is encouraged, cultural horizons are broadened, and ethical and aesthetic values are appreciated. It maintains an academic environment conducive to learning, sensitive to individual, community, and regional needs, and alert to new ideas and challenges of a complex and changing world.
Appalachian State University consists of approximately 15,500 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. A wide variety of resources are available to students including academic and personal counseling, career placement, recreational facilities, health services, and dining facilities. The University's Belk Library houses more than 800,000 volumes, 241,000 government documents, 4,000 periodicals, and nearly a million microform units.
Visitors are welcome to tour and explore our unique campus with its inherent beauty and moderate climate. Each year, ASU hosts numerous visitors who are attracted to our campus because of the many educational, scholarly and recreational activities available to them.
The Wiley F. Smith Department of Psychology is located in Smith-Wright Hall.
The Department currently comprises thirty full time faculty members and progressive undergraduate and graduate programs. Recognized for its reputation of maintaining high standards of teaching and scholarly productivity, the department also serves the local, regional and national communities.

Located in the heart of the southern Appalachian Mountains, Appalachian State University is less than two hours from the regions airports and population centers. The town of Boone has a resident population of 15,000 citizens and sits at an elevation of 1,000 meters. A large part of the University's enticement is a location enhanced by beautiful mountain scenery and opportunities for year-round outdoor recreation. The University is close to the Appalachian Trail (which runs from Maine to Georgia), the Pisgah National Forest, Cherokee National Forest, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are four major ski resorts within a few minutes' driving distance from Boone. Four distinct seasons provide a scenic variety that ranges from picturesque snowfalls in the winter, colorful wildflowers and rushing mountain streams in spring, cool (average temperature 70 degrees F), sunny days in summer, and the clear, crisp color-splashed days of autumn.
