Robert Bringle (Kulynych/Cline Visiting Distinguished Professor, Psychology Department) will present at the 14th annual meeting of the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Civic Engagement (IARSLCE) in New Orleans, LA on September 29 through October 1, 2014. This year's conference has the theme "Reaping What We Sow: Growing a Culture of Community Engagement." Professor Bringle's presentation, "I'm So Angry I Could . . . Help! The Nature of Empathic Anger" is co-authored by Ashley Hedgepath and Derek Stephens, both undergraduate psychology majors at Appalachian State University. Their paper is based on research they conducted that examined how to measure empathic anger and its relationship to attitudes such as social justice orientation, self-efficacy, and charity vs. advocacy orientations toward helping others. The IARSLCE annual research conference is the largest gathering of scholars, practitioners, students, and community partners interested in research on service-learning, community-based research, campus-community partnerships, and civic learning outcomes in P-20 education. Attendees include faculty, administrators, and scholar-practitioners in higher education, community partners, educators in K-12, and professionals and leaders in educational policy and community development.
