Research Interests

I lead the Situated Cognition Lab. I am interested in studying the ways in which we think about and perceive information are affected by our individual backgrounds and surrounding environments. Our minds and mental processes are always situated within a greater context, or culture. My lab's research focuses on how culture and experience influences cognition. We are particularly interested in within-culture variation and the flexibility of culturally-influenced cognitive biases. For example, does what strategy is most effective for improving your memory change when you move from one region of the world to another? Can we train Americans to use a strategy in attention that is more protective of memory with aging? How does Appalachian regional culture influence strategies in memory, attention, and emotional processing? If you are interested in applying to join, fill out the form available here.
