There are various ways to contribute monetarily to help our department meet its goals. In the past, financial gifts have been made to establish student scholarships, to support long-term visits from distinguished researchers, and to support research and travel needs for students and faculty. Student Scholarships
Financial assistance in the form of student scholarship can help with student tuition, research, and travel award. We currently have several types of student awards. The Terrant Scholarship is given each year to students with excellent credentials and demonstrated financial need. WISE awards are given twice a year to students actively involved in research to assist with their research costs and travel to conferences.
Endowed Professorship
Through the generous contributions of the Kulynych and Cline families, the Wiley F. Smith Department of Psychology has established the Kulynych/Cline Distinguished Visiting Professorship. The mission of this visiting professorship is to foster relationships between nationally and internationally recognized scholars and teachers at other institutions and the faculty and students at Appalachian State University, thereby enriching the intellectual and professional environment of the Department. Candidates for the professorship, which entails a faculty appointment from 1 to 3 years, are identified through nominations made by departmental faculty. Dr. Scotty Hargrove who recently retired from the University of South Carolina holds the inaugural appointment to this position.
The Kulynych/Cline Distinguished Visiting Professor is expected to engage in scholarly activity that promotes the visibility of Appalachian State University in the professional community. Responsibilities include developing a colloquium series featuring prominent scholars, teaching a course each semester related to his or her field of expertise, and collaborating with faculty in scholarly activities and their professional development.
